New Product – Challenger Electrical Kit

Do It Yourself Electrical Components Kit for Challenger Ultralights

The Ultralight Aircraft Do-It-Yourself Electrical Wiring Kit includes almost everything you will need to wire up the electrical equipment in a typical ultralight aircraft such as a Challenger.

It includes an 8 station plug-in ATO/ATC fuseblock which is attractive and suitable even for surface mounting on an instrument panel. A selection of 25 compatible fuses of various current ranges is also included. This unit has a snap-on clear gasketed cover to protected the fuses.

Also included in this kit are terminal posts to connect the aircraft electrical system to the heavy gauge electrical cables from the battery. Smaller gauge electrical connectors join these heavy duty posts to the rest of the aircraft wiring circuits.

Two special screw down terminal strips are supplied that can act as common positive supply bus and a common negative ground bus. Two more screw down terminal strips are enclosed to keep aircraft wiring tidy and simplify trouble shooting. These can act as junction blocks to connect the instruments on the panel with their remote sensors and to connect the fuse block outputs to their various loads. Two more push in style terminal strips are included that each have 12 stations but can also be cut down in size to act as convenient junction blocks to simply wiring around the aircraft.

The DIY electrical kit includes a comprehensive selection 250 wiring connectors of various wire gauge sizes and terminal styles to complete the wiring of all the equipment.

Finally, the kit includes 8 heavy duty toggle switches with rugged metal toggles and a momemtary push button start switch. The toggle switches have a 25 Amp rating at 12 vdc. These 8 toggle switches are thus suitable to act as a Master Switch for the entire system and output ON/OFF switches for functions such as strobe lights, nav and landing lights, radio, intercom, GPS, EFIS, EIS, and other instruments and accessories. A selection of 24 coloured vinyl toggle switch covers in 6 colours is enclosed and will make the switch installation look very professional as well as ease pilot work load by colour coding the switch functions.

The only additional thing required to complete the wiring for a typical Challenger ultralight aircraft installation is the wires and a battery. The voltage rectifier/regulator block is included in the kit. Your installation requirements may vary depending on the complexity of your instrumentation and the number of 12 volt power outputs you choose. Keep in mind that the output load capacity of the Rotax 503 and 582 engines is 16 Amps

New Mod – Electrical /Avionics Shelf

One of the challenges in building the Challenger (pun intended) is to find room to place the electrical equipment. Things such as the voltage regulator and associated electrical buses need a convenient platform near the instrument panel. There is also no place to put any other avionics devices such as an altitude encoder for a transponder. There is simply no provision for these in the factory kit. The builder is left up to his or her own devices to manage this.

The solution is to build a small platform in the nose above the rudder pedals. This platform can be built using 1/2″ aluminum angle and .025″ aluminum sheet metal. Be sure to leave enough clearance for the nose cone, the pilots feet (with boots on) and any long instruments mounted on the panel (including room for wiring harnesses.

The platform is about 14″ wide and can be 6 to 10″ in depth. Small sheet aluminum squares on the sides will give the platform framework rigidity and stability.

See our Accessories page for information on Avionics shelves built by Lake Aviation to fit the nose section of your Challenger Ultralight.
