What does “Amateur Built” mean?

The Amateur Built rules are more stringent than the Advanced Ultralight rules involving more inspections during construction and the installation of additional features. Some of the requirements included carb heat, fuel shut off, fire extinguisher, gascolator, aluminum fuel lines, bottom ribs etc. The advantage for the builder/owner is that modifications can be made legally, without violating the Statement of Conformity. The disadvantage is that a Private Pilot License is the minimum license requirement, as well as a float endorsement, if so desired. However, if flying on floats, the time can be credited towards regular float time, such as for a Commercial license.
